Added September 29, 2025.This small joist was carefully cleaned, buffed and waxed using a slow process we have been working on for the past year. It involves brushing away the grain dust from the surface and picking out embedded material from the cracks. Then using hand tools to buff the surface and surface irregularities until we are satisfied with the overall look. Blending in areas that stand out too much using home-made, water-based metal oxides and finding the right color and tones to look natural. Using paste wax to bring out the saw marks, defects, grain and patina. And then a careful torching to help spread the wax into cervices and to burn off any fuzz. Most of this process has been developed and fine tuned by my restoration and installation guys, Christian and Tim. I couldn’t continue what I’m doing without them!
